Los Angeles Mesothelioma Lawyer Attorney Help

No one who hears that he or she has cancer is hearing anything short of devastating news.  However, certain types of cancer are more serious than others, and the prospects for overcoming this disease largely depend on the type of cancer involved and the overall stage of advancement of the disease once it’s discovered.

Unfortunately, there is one type of cancer that to date carries with it a certain death sentence.  Mesothelioma is a relatively rare form of cancer, but its mortality rate continues to sit at 100%.  Statistics show that mesothelioma kills approximately 2,500 people in the United States every year, and like every other form of cancer, there is no direct link between mesothelioma and one consistent cause.

However, mesothelioma patients all appear to have one thing in common that links them – exposure to asbestos, which is a material that at one time was used quite prominently in many different contexts, including new buildings, automotive parts, shipping parts and many other scenarios due to its tendency to resist burning.

How Mesothelioma Happens

Much of what involves mesothelioma is still a mystery, but as more and more people have been diagnosed with this disease, research has shown that a pathway of development can be pinpointed to an extent.  However, much still has to be learned before the medical science community can make meaningful progress towards a cure.

The initial ‘step’ towards mesothelioma involves exposure to asbestos, although at this point there is no established ‘time limit’ of exposure to asbestos before the risk of mesothelioma can be clearly defined.  A person does not even need to be directly exposed to a high amount of asbestos fibers.  Some cases have involved people who merely washed the clothes of a worker who was exposed to asbestos before he or she was diagnosed with the disease.

Subsequent to exposure, the patient, without knowledge, has these microscopic fibers penetrate into the tissue that surrounds the lungs, known as the mesothelia.  The lungs and respiratory system in general begin to work to expel these fibers from the body, but to this point, no documented cases exist where a person was successfully able to do so.

As a result of this expulsion effort, mucous tends to form around the fibers inside the chest, and these membranes in effect combine with the fibers to form tumors that begin to attach more firmly to the tissue and to grow inside of the patient’s chest.  Ultimately, these tumors grow to the point where the patient cannot breathe.
